PMS - Browser and Connectivity Requirements

This document provides some guidance regarding the suitability of your internet connection and the internet browser installed on your PC for PMS. Like many modern applications, PMS works by running in the internet browser installed on your PC. Common browsers include Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Firefox.

Some browser versions (particularly older versions) do not perform as well with newly developed applications such as PMS. The general rule is the newer the browser version you use, the better your PMS experience will be. Older browsers are generally less secure, less feature-rich, and can suffer from slow performance.

Q: What browser do you recommend?

A: We recommend that for youto access all of the rich features and to obtain the optimum user experience in PMS, that you use the latest versions of Google Chrome or Firefox Mozilla. This is due to their high levels of security, performance and their compatibility with all of the enhancement plug-ins used in PMS. If you do not have Google Chrome or Firefox installed on your PC then please talk to your IT team about getting it installed.

Q: Can I use Internet Explorer?

A: Yes you can. If you cannot get Google Chrome or Firefox installed on your PC then we recommend Internet Explorer version 11, version 10 will also provide a good PMS experience for you. However, older versions of Internet Explorer (e.g. version 9, 8 and older) are not recommended. (Note, Internet Explorer 8 is no longer supported by Microsoft on Windows XP and Internet Explorer 9 was automatically updated some time ago because of a security hole).

Q: What should I do if I only have an older version of Internet Explorer which I need to keep in order to run other systems I use?

A: That is okay, you can get Google Chrome or Firefox Mozilla installed alongside older Internet Explorer versions. This will enable you to use Google Chrome or Firefox for PMS, whilst still using anolder version of Internet Explorer for the older applications. Please speak to your IT team for advice on this.

Q: Why shouldn’t I use Internet Explorer 8 or 9 for PMS?

A: Internet Explorer 8 was release over 5 years ago. It is no longer supported by Microsoft meaning that security flaws will not be updated. As well as security issues, Internet Explorer 8 and 9 will not provide you with the feature-rich user experience that some of the newer browsers will when using PMS.

Q: Do I need to upgrade my internet connection?

A: PMS is a typical browser based system where most of the processing happens on our servers. It will run well on a typical broadband connection. As a rule of thumb, if your connection gives you good performance when using commonly used websites like www.bbc.co.uk you will get a similar performance when using PMS.

Users who undertake activities which place higher burden on network capacity and therefore browser performance, may require a more substantial connection and modern browser to get a good experience. These tasks will be those which move large volumes of data into and out of the system such as import / export large files and requesting and sending of large amounts of data.
